Weekly, Fortnightly or Monthly: How Often Should You Get a Cleaner?

An honest guide to choosing weekly, fortnightly or monthly cleaning for your home.

If you're thinking about getting a cleaner, one of the first questions is how often you actually need one. Weekly sounds ideal, monthly sounds cheaper, and fortnightly sits somewhere in between.

The short answer: for many busy households, fortnightly is a good balance. Weekly suits homes that get messy quickly, like families with young children or pets. Monthly can work for smaller, tidier homes where someone keeps on top of things between visits. Each monthly clean usually costs more, though, because there's more to catch up on.

The right choice depends on your home and how you live. Here's how to work it out.

Weekly, fortnightly or monthly: who each option suits
Weekly cleaning

Best for: families with young children, homes with pets, larger households, and people who'd rather not do any cleaning themselves.

In a busy home, bathrooms, kitchen benches and floors can look lived-in again within a few days. Weekly cleaning keeps on top of this, so each visit is about maintaining your home rather than catching up. It's also the option where you'll do the least cleaning yourself in between.

Fortnightly cleaning

Best for: couples, smaller families and working professionals who keep things reasonably tidy day to day.

Fortnightly is a popular choice for a reason. It's usually often enough to stop grime building up in bathrooms and kitchens, without the cost of a weekly service. You'll probably still wipe benches, tidy up or run the vacuum between visits, but the bigger jobs are taken care of.

Monthly cleaning

Best for: singles or couples in smaller homes, people who travel a lot or are rarely home, and households who clean regularly themselves but want help with the detailed jobs.

A monthly clean is a good way to get the thorough jobs done, like scrubbing the shower and dusting skirting boards, without a bigger commitment. Keep in mind that a month is a long time in a bathroom or kitchen, so each visit takes longer than a weekly or fortnightly clean.

What affects how often your home needs cleaning?

There's no single right answer, but these things make the biggest difference:

  • Household size. More people means more showers, more cooking, more dishes and more foot traffic.

  • Children. Young kids bring fingerprints, crumbs, toys and spills. Homes with little ones often benefit from more frequent cleans.

  • Pets. Fur, paw prints and pet smells build up quickly, especially on floors and soft furnishings.

  • Lifestyle. If you work from home, cook most nights or entertain often, your home gets more use than one that's empty all day.

  • Number of bathrooms. Bathrooms usually take the longest to clean properly and show build-up the fastest.

  • How much cleaning you do yourself. If you're happy to wipe down the bathroom and vacuum between visits, you may need a cleaner less often. If you'd rather not think about cleaning at all, more frequent visits make sense.

A simple test: think about how many days after a clean your home starts to bother you. If it's only a few days, weekly is probably right. If it's around a week or so, fortnightly may suit. If it still feels fine after a couple of weeks, monthly could work.

Why do monthly cleans cost more per visit?

This surprises a lot of people, so it's worth explaining.

When a home is cleaned weekly or fortnightly, dirt doesn't have much time to build up. Each visit is mostly maintenance: keeping clean surfaces clean.

When a home is cleaned monthly, there's more to deal with each time: soap scum in the shower, grease on the stovetop and splashback, more dust on surfaces and skirting boards, and more dirt in the floors. Removing build-up takes more time and effort than maintaining a clean surface, so each monthly visit generally takes longer, and costs more, than a weekly or fortnightly one.

That doesn't make monthly cleaning poor value. It just means the price per visit reflects the extra work. If you'd like to understand more about what goes into a cleaning price, read why house cleaning prices vary so much and how much a regular cleaner costs in Bayside.

Should you start with a first clean before regular cleaning?

In most cases, yes. If your home hasn't had a thorough clean for a while, a normal maintenance visit can't bring it back up to standard. A first clean deals with the build-up, so your regular visits can focus on keeping your home that way.

At Dust&Declutter, we call this your Presentation Clean. Here's how it works:

  • It's charged at an hourly rate, because every home is different.

  • Depending on your home's size and condition, it may take one or two visits.

  • Once your home is up to standard, your ongoing cleans are charged at an agreed fixed rate.

This means your first clean isn't rushed, and your regular price is based on maintaining your home, not catching up. You can read more about what happens during your first clean.

How to choose the right frequency without paying for more than you need

You don't need to book more cleaning than your home needs. A few honest suggestions:

  • Choose based on how your home is actually used. Think about your budget and your household, not what sounds most impressive.

  • Be realistic about what you'll do yourself. If you know you won't clean between visits, a longer gap means each clean has more to catch up on, and your home will feel untidy for longer.

  • Think about which rooms matter most. If bathrooms are the job you dread, you don't have to book a whole-house clean. We offer Bathrooms Only, Bathrooms, Kitchen & Floors, and Whole House cleans. See what's included in each cleaning service.

  • Ask questions before you commit. A good cleaner should explain why they're recommending a certain frequency, not just push the most frequent option.

  • Review it after a few cleans. Your needs can change with a new baby, a new pet or a busier time at work. There's no lock-in contract with Dust&Declutter, so you're not stuck with a choice that no longer suits you.

So, how often should you get a cleaner?
  • Weekly: busy families, homes with kids or pets, or if you'd rather not clean at all.

  • Fortnightly: a good balance for many couples, smaller families and working professionals.

  • Monthly: smaller, tidier homes where you keep on top of things yourself, keeping in mind that each visit costs more.
